Okay so the Best Of Lists are hitting

2013

I’m going to start with music because books are way harder!  Women dominate my favorites this year from blues to political tinged electronic – my favorites run a wide genre swath…

In no particular order because that changes – here are the albums on my top 10 of 2013 list:

Waxahatchee –  Cerulean Salt

I LOVE this band. They remind me a lot of old school Breeders and some of the female fronted bands I loved in the 90’s and a little of Wye Oak as well.

this song is one of my favorites Hollow Bedroom:

Valerie June’s Pushin’ Against a Stone – OMG do I love this one.  She’s fantastic. Bluesy, smart, strong. I love her voice.
This one is Workin’ Woman Blues

Arctic Monkeys – AM

I LOVE this band. I’ve loved all their previous albums but this one ranks up there with Whatever People Say I am, I’m Not as my all time favorite.
Do I Wanna Know

Foals – Holy Fire.  I’ve played this one so much and across so many books this year. One thing a lot of my favorites of this year have in common is that they’re just not like anything else out right now. No two songs on this album are the same.

This is Inhaler

And Late Night

M.I.A Matangi

Wow. Just. Wow.

Bring the Noize

Beyonce surprised pretty much everyone when she released BEYONCE without a single, presales or hoopla and wow, she doesn’t need it with this fantastic album. At this point I’m not even sure if I could choose just one favorite. I’ve listened to this album over and over since I bought it Friday the 13th! At the time of my making this list the videos (and the album comes with a video for each song, making the album even more fantastic) weren’t available so I highly encourage you to check them out yourself at iTunes!  ETA – Beyonce just uploaded two official videos to her Youtube channel

 DRUNK IN LOVE *swoon*

and XO

My top three from this album are: Blow, Mine and Superpower (though Flawless is also up there, along with Drunk in Love and Partition and Pretty Hurts and Blue, etc)

Other faves that just missed the very top of my list:

Nine Inch Nails – Hesitation Marks

Pearl Jam- Lightning Bolt (I am a HUGE PJ fan and I have to say this is my favorite album since Yield.)

Queens of the Stone Age – LIke Clockwork – I LOVE this one.

Trixie Whitley’s Fourth Corner – Trixie Whitley is a fairly recent discovery (h/t to Eden Bradley!) and I LOVE her so much.

Vampire Weekend – Modern Vampires

All in all, 2013 was a really great year for some new musical discoveries and the return of some old favorites too!
