Favorite Lists – Music

It’s one of the best parts of each year – Best music lists are starting to come out! It’s always a time for me to discover new favorites and for a music hoor like me, it’s heaven! I also break my personal rule of NEVER READING COMMENTS to devour the comments to music posts. One to laugh at all the “Oh I only loved them until other people heard of them and now I hate them” comments, two, to get more recommendations, 3. to be reminded that musical tastes are so personal that my “ugh, how can that record be on the list” is someone else’s “OMG best music evar”

Here’s one from Paste Magazine This one isn’t a “Best of Year” list but a top rated list (Some of my personal top albums are on this list as well)

Pitchfork also issued their list (and again, some of my personal top are on this list too)

MOJO’s top 20 is also out

My favorites this year in no particular order (and note that not all these CDs came out in 2012, I just discovered/bought and loved in 2012:

Alabama Shakes – Boys and Girls. Like whoa. Brittany Howard’s voice is an amazing mix of blues, rock, country, a little Janis, a little Aretha, some growl – there’s really no other band out there right now like them. Here’s one of my favorites from Boys and Girls called I Ain’t The Same

Frank Ocean – Channel Orange

I love this CD. Like, listen to it all the time love it. There’s been a lot of hype around Ocean and his music and in this case, it’s totally warranted.

The Joy Formidable – The Big Roar

This one came out in 2011, but I didn’t truly give them a listen until a few months back. If you like Silversun Pickups you’ll most likely dig Joy Formidable. Not exactly the same, but in that vein. This one is called Austere

They’ve got a new release out in January I’ve got pre-ordered!

Lana Del Rey – Paradise. People can say what they want, but I love this one. Love Del Rey’s vintage, full, sensual voice with her dirty lyrics (though I admit, I cringe at the use of daddy in a sexual sense, always creeps me out)

Burning Desire is my favorite off the CD but for whatever reason I can’t seem to find a full video or anything with good audio to post here. I heartily encourage you to head over to iTunes to grab it

Lykke Li – Wounded Rhymes (and Youth Novels) both came out before this year, but I didn’t discover her until January.

This one is simple and beautiful – Unrequited Love

Mark Lanegan Band – Blues Funeral – holy cow do I love his voice. When I write that someone has a whiskey and smoke voice – this is what I mean. This one has been part of many a writing soundtrack this year.

Ode to Sad Disco

Sharon Van Etten – Tramp. Hands down in my top 3 of 2012. I love this album. Love the songwriting. Love her voice.

I’m posting two because as I said, I love this CD, SFM

Ask

And Serpents (featuring Jenn Wassner from Wye Oak – another one of my 2012 faves)

Tame Impala – Lonerism I can’t explain Tame Impala – they’re sort of electronic. Sort of psychedelic. Sort of 70’s rock and roll. And yet, not. I seriously love this CD.

Mind Mischief – My favorite from the CD

Elephant

Wye Oak – Civilian – another that came out in 2011 but I didn’t discover them until earlier this year.

If you watch Walking Dead you may have heard the title track which is how I discovered them. But We Were Wealth is a song I come back to over and over

Honorable mention to:

Silversun Pickups – Neck of the Woods
Alex Clare – Lateness of The Hour
The XX – Coexist
Kendrick Lamar – good kid mAAd city
Mumford and Sons – Babel
Gary Clark, jr. Blak and Blu
