Character Inspiration…

I have an entire board on pinterest devoted to character inspiration.

Meet the character inspiration for Damon, one of the characters in my new urban fantasy, Blade Song. It’s published under my other pen name, J.C. Daniels.

Dwayne Johnson.

Actually… I think I can wrap up this blog post here…

Um, never mind. I’m promoting a book, right? Right. Okay, then.

Damon did not go the way he was supposed to go in this book. I’ve had the rough idea for this series sort of mapped out on my computer for a while. And the story was just…not coming. Then I opened it up and kind of realized I was going in the wrong direction. The Damon I had wasn’t the Damon I needed him to be for the book.

Especially considering what I planned on doing to Kit…ah, never mind. That’s for a later post. Anyway, the book is Kit’s. It’s completely hers. But a couple of people play predominant roles in it, and one of them is Damon.

And the Damon I had initially sketched out when I was trying to plot the story…well. He was all wrong. So I threw him away and started over. I was trying to figure out just what needed out of Damon. And there it was. Or rather, there he was.

Somebody just a little larger than life. Once I had a more solid image what I needed out of him, I had a better image of who he was. And once that started to flow, the book did, too.

Here’s a short excerpt…. Just a note, this is not a romance, although there is a bit of that running through the book.

“Gruer was a stupid-ass, cruel bastard. You seriously thought he would chase me out? Thought he could kill me?” Not damn likely. I curled my lip at him. Seriously, they were betting on me? What the hell? “Don’t the shifters have better things to do with their money?”

“Well,” he said. “We always like to find amusing ways to kill time.”

“Hard to believe there’s nothing more amusing out there than me.”

“Oh, you’ve been very amusing, Colbana.” He leaned forward and light glinted off his eyes in the most unusual way—cat’s eyes… Shit, he better not be getting ready to shift on me. I was so screwed if he did.

But even as I thought it, I realized that wasn’t it. There was just something…eerie about his eyes. Hypnotic. Scary. “Want to hear how I bet?”

“Sure. Tell me, which side were you on?”

He laughed. “The side that loses, usually. After all, you’re still alive…” Then his laugh faded away into a smile. “Nobody’s bitten you and made you change your skin once a month, either. And you’re still here.”

“Oh, I’ve been bitten.” I smiled. “I’m immune.”

Black brows rose a fraction. “That’s not likely.”

I shrugged. Likely didn’t mean impossible. The were virus was pretty damn invasive. Either it killed you or it changed you—and it was far more likely to kill you. The virus would kill seventy percent of the people it infected. Twenty percent became were. Immunity ran only through about five percent of the human population.

But I wasn’t human.

“Trust me. I’ve been bit. More than once. Doesn’t take.”

“Bite’s not the only thing that will do it.” The smile on his face went sly and damned if I didn’t feel my heart kick up a little.

Great snippet and an awesome inspiration for a character. I love a guy that can kick butt and make me laugh, and Dwayne Johnson does both.
