I read Neuromancer when I was in college in the early 90s. To say this book marked me is an understatement.
Case was the hottest computer cowboy cruising the information superhighway–jacking his consciousness into cyberspace, soaring through tactile lattices of data and logic, rustling encoded secrets for anyone with the money to buy his skills. Then he double-crossed the wrong people, who caught up with him in a big way–and burned the talent out of his brain, micron by micron. Banished from cyberspace, trapped in the meat of his physical body, Case courted death in the high-tech underworld. Until a shadowy conspiracy offered him a second chance–and a cure–for a price….
Gibson’s writing style is sparse, never wasting a single word. And yet the world he creates in Neuromancer is complex and so very three dimensional. He says in under 300 pages most people couldn’t have related in 700 pages (and many of the books that came later in the genre Gibson’s Neuromancer helped bring into creation, cyberpunk, do indeed edge up into fantasy page length). The writing is to the bone, much like Case, the novel’s protagonist. The future in Gibson’s Neuromancer is a dark one and yet, in many ways it’s not very far off the mark. It’s our dark future and yet, it’s familiar via the people who populate it.
It’s been copied. It’s inspired a generation of authors (me included). It’s spun into new ideas, new terminologies and concepts and it remains a book I return to over and over for the stark beauty of his words.
