Today’s guest is Beth Kery! Beth and I sold to NY at almost the same time, to the same editor. I didn’t really know her that well at the time, but really, nothing breaks the ice like that sort of experience, LOL. She’s a fabulous and very diversely talented author and a very nice person on top of that.
Top Intense Cinema Sex Scenes

I was trying to come up with a topic for Ms. Lauren’s release celebration (congrats, Lauren!), and was having a pretty rough time of it. Fortuitously, Romantic Times sent out a request for attendees to submit proposals for presentations at next year’s Los Angeles convention, and I started to formulate an idea about “Emotionally Intense Sex Scenes”. Anyway, RT requested that proposals included a title that echoes a movie title in order to go with the theme of the convention being in Los Angeles. I started brainstorming on movies known for erotic tension and intense sex scenes (mainstream films released to a general audience).
What movies come to mind for you?
Here are a few that popped into my mind. What about the palpable tension that comes from tasting forbidden fruit? Diane Lane knew she shouldn’t, but she did—did she ever–and the sparks fly between her and the oh-so-beautiful Olivier Martinez in Unfaithful.
The theme of lovers finally consummating a passion that’s reached the boiling point is unbeatable, demonstrated by Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes sensual, soulful lovemaking in Shakespeare in Love or by Jake’s and Neytiri’s erotic bonding in Avatar. (In researching this, I learned that the love scene in Avatar was cut, actually, to make a PG-13 rating. Can’t wait to see the unedited director’s cut).
Another scene that comes to mind is the one on the train in Risky Business. I’m not a huge Cruise fan, but the cinematography and the iconic Phil Collins song really make this scene a sexy standout. I also recall vividly the scene from Pretty Woman where they make love on the piano. I liked the segue from Richard Gere’s intense, morose mood as he played and her offering herself as a way to escape his darkness. The keys being struck randomly while the camera is averted at the end of the scene adds the perfect poignant touch. Of course, the classical scene where Rhett sweeps Scarlet up the grand staircase to bed is just jam-packed with sexual tension. One can easily imagine the sparks flying in the bedroom after that one.
Here’s one you may or may not have seen from one of my fave movies: the scene in A Room with a View where George kisses Lucy for the first time. It’s the essence of the moment innocence meets desire. During an outing on a beautiful, sunlit day, she unexpectedly comes upon George all alone in a field. Kiri Te Kanawa sings Puccini’s “Chi il bel sogno di Doretta” as George turns and notices Lucy’s presence. The opera swells as he plows through the wheat toward her. Lucy—the innocent—has this look on her face like she doesn’t know what’s coming, but whatever it may be it’s going to be powerful and exciting. He lays a kiss on her…and her life is changed forever.
Breathtaking scene.
As for the RT presentation proposal title, I’m thinking something like Body and Soul might work…or what about Last Tango in L.A.? ☺

I love Room with a View, great movie! I liked all of your examples (esp. the Pretty Woman one). I am a sucker for first kiss scenes but probably one of my favorite sexy scenes is from Truth About Cats and Dogs when they have phone sex.

I guess the scence in Running Scared, a movie with Paul Walker (hubba hubba). That’s one of the few that come to mind.

there’s so many great movie scenes to pick from including Lauren’s choices and the ones listed above… here’s one – Jennifer Garner and Timothy Olyphant in Catch and Release. it’s sweet and romantic and hot, and then they get interrupted by her roommate, so you know they’ll have another scene to finish what they started.

Hmm seems way too easy to say Rhett and Scarlet – the staircase scene, especially since that’s not even a sex scene!
*So* agreed on the Unfaithful with yes, beautiful Oliver, and also The Big Easy – made me search out Dennis Quaid movies 😛
Now I feel pressured to come up with something good :X Not a movie, but the 4 episode version of Jane Eyre from the BBC with Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens.
I’ll have to think about an actual movie love scene…

Great question. Certainly the scene you mentioned above from “Unfaithful” is a stand out for me as well. There are two others that come to mind.
One is from “The Big Easy”, with Dennis Quaid and Ellen Barkin. Totally hot bedroom scene that has a lead in thwart with sexual tension. The audience knows what is going on but by the same token a lot is left to the imagination. I also loved the way Quaid called her “char”..
The other is from “No Way Out” with Kevin Costner and Sean Young. Totally hot sexy scene in the back of a limo. Costner and Young had amazing chemistry and the plot of the story was littered with intrigue.

I would definitely have to say the seen from “The Notebook” Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams or “The Time Travelers Wife” Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana when he had just had the vasectomy. Love Both of those movies.

Haven’t seen many movies in the last few years and never really thought about a favorite love scene out of the ones I do know. I’m more and action and sci-fi gal when it comes to movies.
But I agree about the scene in Avatar. Would love to see the uncut version of the movie.

Well, not sure if this was a sex scene…but very intense & sexy, Hawkeye & Cora in The Last of the Mohicans is a favorite of mine.

There are many movies and love scenes to choose from.
One scene ALWAYS plays back in my head is Bull Durham. Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon smoke up the scene when he expertly unhooks her garter belt snaps. Susan’s character prided herself on being the experienced older woman for young baseball ahtletes. But there is something to be said about a man with confidence and experience! Mmmm! Mmmm!
Another romantic scene is the first kiss from The Quiet Man. **heart aflutter** John Wayne has been and always will be the ultimate Romantic Hero!

There is a really hot love scene between Charlie Sheen and Kristy Swanson in the movie, The Chase. It takes place in the backseat of a car 😉
The movie itself isn’t that great, but that scene is smoking!

There’s a lot of sexy movies out there. So many of my faves have been mentioned. Of these, my favorite is the sex scene between Dennis Quaid and Ellen Barkin in The Big Easy. They don’t have a typically sexy look to them, but put them together and it’s smokin’ hot.

Two great movies come to mind that need mentioning.
A really OLD favorite of mine, is ‘Two Moon Junction’…
The chemistry sizzles as good girl debutante takes a ride with the bad boy that she just can’t forget.
A newer release is ‘Killing me Softly’ with Heather Graham and Joseph Finnes. (Sp?)
The sex seems to explode between these two, as one lets go to all proprieties and goes after who she thinks she wants.

Agreeing with all the examples so far! My favorite sex scene is actually from a German soap, Alles Was Zaehlt. The shower scene between Roman and Deniz in episode 751 is both incredibly hot and emotionally significant to the characters and storyline.

well the first one that popped in my head was between Jude Law and Rachel Wievz (sp) at enemy at the gates. Just the way they did it while everyone around them was sleeping, her expressions and him covering her mouth so no one will hear them…so hotly done!

Ghost the pottery scene with Patrick and Demi. After watching that who didn’t want to take up pottery. The second movie would have to be Brokeback Mountain with Heath and Jake. Need I say more.

Oh I would have to saw the bedroom scene from “Fright Night”, yes it’s a horror movies with Vampires…but Jerry who was played by Chris sarandon was so darn sexy as a vampire and that bite scene was the best scene ever!

The Postman Always Rings Twice with Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange has one Hot Sex Scene I’ll never forget!!! Flour everywhere….oh yeah baby….bake me a cake…hehehe.
Top Gun had a great love scene and I can’t think of it without humming the tune from the Righteous Brothers….So Yummy!!!
