Snippet Saturday – Friendship

Today’s theme is Friendship. I love to write frienship and family so it was a hard choice to find a snippet! I decided to toss up a quick sneaky peek at INSIDE OUT. INSIDE OUT is a friends to lovers book, one of my favorites to write. So Ella is not only friends with Elise, but with Cope as well…

INSIDE OUT by LAUREN DANE

Releasing November 2

Damn. He caught her staring. Ella knew she blushed furiously, but the slow, sexy smile he sent her took the edge off her embarrassment, warming it into pleasure. She was emotional enough after Rennie’s speech, and she’d not-so-casually looked for him, only to find him with Raven and her friend again.

She watched, her insides warming up as he shook his head to whatever
they offered and looked to her, at first with surprise and then, when he’d caught her looking, sly pleasure.

“I say this because I love you. You need to bang that drum, Ella. Bang it like there’s no tomorrow,” Elise whispered into her ear.

“So romantic,” she murmured back, trying not to laugh.

“Don’t judge, El. Don’t judge. I’m gonna play rock band on my soon-to-
be-husband’s body all night long.”

At this, she lost her battle and giggled, right as Cope reached her, taking her hand.

“What’s this all about?” He kissed her knuckles again, casually but sparking heat.

“Elise is giving me her secret recipe for biscuits.” She smiled widely, and he raised his brows at her.

“Must be some kind of biscuits then by the look on your face.”

“Biscuits are serious business, Andrew. They’re irresistible, and you can never only have one.”

He drew her away from the crowd, back toward the house where it was quieter. “I really must try these biscuits. You’re clearly eating different ones than me, and while I’ve enjoyed them, I’m apparently missing out on something.”

Oh, how she wanted to be bold and say something suggestive just then. She didn’t really know how. It wasn’t that she was ashamed or anything, but she didn’t have much experience with this stuff.

FAQ

Occasionally I try to answer some questions that crop up over and over (so if you have one, now’s the time to ask it!) I’m going to take on a few I’ve gotten lately:

1. I’ve just finished reading REVELATION – will there be more and when?

My plan is to write Gibson’s book next. I have been working on his storyline and the proposal for his book will be one I write in the next week or so. The witches thing, you’ll see more of in my upcoming paranormal romance series for Berkley Sensation – Bound By Magic. The books will be set in the very rigidly organized world of clan witches (not Klan!). Gibson’s book will lean more toward the shifter end of things.

2. (Related to 1) Will you be writing any more wolves?

Yes. I would love to do Akio’s story, as well as Dave. It’s all a matter of time.

3. Will you be writing a book for Adrian and will you put him with Raven?

I sent the proposal for As Is to my agent this week. All I’m going to say for now is that the woman I put Adrian with will deserve him. Beta loved the proposal and if my editor does and buys it, I’ll share more details…

4. Will you be writing any more Cherchez Pack books?

I want to, I really do. But this is also about time. I do like to revisit old series characters, but for the time being I’ve put it on the list of “things I’d like to do when I have time”

5. Will you be doing any more books with Megan Hart?

I’d wager, yes, LOL. We loved writing Taking Care of Business and No Reservations – but she’s a busy lady and so am I so it’s about finding the time to do a joint project again. She’s doing a holiday novella for Leah and Brandon though, for Carina!

Please feel free to ask more questions! I’ll add them here as I go

Mary wants to know about The Chases and the Federation books

Chases: Just this week I sent a proposal for Nathan’s book, called Once Bitten, to my editor at Samhain. So yes, there will be more (or I hope so, she hasn’t said if she wants it yet). I want to write a Valentine’s novella for one of the Chase couples, but the deadline would hit right around when I have two other books due, so it might have to be in the spring instead.

Federation: Another proposal I’m currently putting together is for CAPTIVATED, the last book in the Phantom Corps mini-series. This one will be a menage featuring Vincenz, Julian and a woman you meet at the end of Mesmerized, Hannah.

What about Wilhelm Ellis?

I would love to do a book or a storyline for him. He’s got a great backstory and I adore him. But it’s all going to be about sales and that jazz.

What digital publishers other than Samhain do I need to scour for your books?

I write for Berkley Heat (and next year also Sensation)
Carina Press (as of October 25)
Harlequin Spice -What Happens in Vegas and What Happens in Vegas…After Dark
Black Lace – With Megan Hart
Whispers (a short novella entitled Sleight of Hand)
Samhain
and I used to write for Ellora’s Cave (if you buy these, I suggest using their site as the ebooks they sell at Amazon are far more expensive than at their site)

What I want to know is do you have any say in what your covers look like?

It depends on the publisher as they all have different processes. But essentially they all seek my input – what do my characters look like, what mood or symbols are important, etc. Sometimes they listen to me and sometimes it goes in an entirely different direction.

Also, what is your biggest pet peeve when you read books?

I can forgive almost anything if the characters suck me in. One thing I absolutely cannot abide is rape as titillation. I do not read any books with rape (and that includes so called forced seduction) because I hate them. Rape is not sexy. Period.

Also in BDSM books, I steer clear of humiliation as it does nothing for me.

Writerly Blatherly Type Post

All done with AS IS synopsis, yay! Beta readers loved it, also yay! Agent is at RWA National this week so she’ll see it when she returns. I’m a little sad, oh, okay, a lot sad I wasn’t able to make it this year, LOL. But I know everyone is having a great time and there’s always next year in NYC, which I will attend (even made arrangements with the parents to hang with kids as the dude will be traveling for work during part of that time)

The details for several books I’ll be writing through the end of this year are beginning to come to me. I’m making notes and realizing I need to figure out a way to do a series encyclopedia. Some have suggested One Note, someone from Scrivener pinged me at twitter to suggest it too. I’m going to check them out this week to see if they fit what I need. My system of notecards worked fine until I hit critical mass on my Federation Chronicles books and I realized I had something like 400 cards with all sorts of details and it took forever to find things.

I suppose really, even though it sounds sort of insane, I like when I discover new ways to manage my writing, new ways to write and all that jazz.

Speaking of writing (shocking, on a writer’s blog and everything, LOL). Each year I try something new. Multiple somethings sometimes.

Part of my process in the last six months has been this need I have to endlessly tinker with the opening of my book until I get it just right. Part of it is, I suppose, the knowledge that a book’s opening is hugely important so I get all hung up on it.

BUT, I can’t get it just right until I hit the epiphany portion – that sweet spot where I finally *know* my characters and why they do what they do. And then I have to go back to adjust later. Anyway, it’s a process that is less linear than I’ve used before but I find I like the end product and it’s a further distillation of what I’d been doing before so I’m going to go with it.

The last eight months or so, I was on a series of back to back to back deadlines. I normally like to give myself all sorts of extra time so I can turn the book in early, but I used up every bit of time more often because I wanted to spend more time tinkering. (and a bunch of life stuff that sort of made everything else fall away – oh and I got the swine flu right before a deadline last year, man was I glad to see 2010, LOL. Part of the reason I was so close to deadline when I usually try to keep at least a week or two ahead, is that I had this opportunity to write a novella for an anthology at Heat. I was absolutely beyond thrilled to be asked to be in this anthology so it was totally worth it to me to do and fit into my schedule.

But back to that tinkering with the beginning thing (I do have a point in here somewhere)

I re-started the novella four times. Twice I gave up on ideas all together and twice I honed in and changed essential elements and had to totally start over with the new idea melded into the old one. It seems to me when I type it, that it was a pain in the ass, and indeed it was to get 12K into a 25K word novella and suddenly think, “Damn this story is not going to wrap up in the next 12K.” or “This has no conflict, it’s just meh” But it was a creative challenge and I took the risk of time to just wait for the right elements to hit me and click.

That was totally beyond my comfort zone. I tend to be a lot more control freaky when I write than that. It totally made me nervous as I did it, but I let go and listened to myself. And the end product is a story I really love. And I got a single title length new contemporary romance series proposal written too (the idea that I knew was too big for the novella length).

It may not work for every project. Sometimes you have to ride out the “Oh my god this is horrible” feeling and keep writing, knowing that there’s a “this sucks” time in every single book. Sometimes you hang on, write through it and by the time you finish the first draft, you know exactly how to go back and fix it.

But I love that I keep learning. Writing has been such an unexpected and wonderful thing to me. It’s always changing and offering me new challenges and event though I kid about being busy and all that, there’s no better job in the world. I get to create every day. For my job! I love doing this.

I’ve also been using Write Or Die to get my words in, which has led to me plotting scenes when I haven’t really done that so much before. Last year I tried it a little, but this year I’ve been working on it more and I find with the Write or Die format, I can map the scene out in varying levels of detail – sometimes it’s like, “firefight at mine pit” and others it’s more broken down into goals for the scene with elements I need to bring out – “discussion – show anger about past, she finally gets it and shares story about sailing” . Then I set the timer for short bursts 20 or 30 minutes, leaving the settings normal but with a fairly aggressive correction (for instance the screen behind the text window will go pink and then to red if you don’t type for a certain time and after that it blinks and gives you horrible sounds like babies wailing or klaxons.

I find that the background screen changing makes me snap back into focus. I can easily give myself 30 minutes with outside stuff shut down, no internet, stay working, etc. And in 20 – 30 minutes I can get on average about 900 – 1400 words. If I don’t finish the scene in the first timed burst, I start another right after that to get it all done at once and then I go into the document to smooth, revise and correct.

I’m starting a novella and then on to finish Goddess With a blade and I’m definitely going to keep using Write or Die to get my daily words in.

And speaking of words, I’m off to get mine in!

Guest! Elisabeth Naughton

Today’s guest is Elisabeth Naughton – who happens to be totally fabulous and if you haven’t read her books yet, you totally should.

Thanks so much to Lauren for having me here today!

My second Eternal Guardian book – ENTWINED – released yesterday. For those of you new to the series, the Eternal Guardians are seven warriors descended from the seven greatest heroes in all of Ancient Greece. Zander, the hero in ENTWINED, is a descendent of Achilles. He’s the oldest guardian, the one rumored to be immortal, the fiercest warrior and the only one with nothing to lose. I fell in love with Zander when I was writing MARKED – book one in the series – so I’m excited for readers to finally get their hands on his story.

People ask me all the time, why Greek mythology? I don’t have an easy answer except to say that I love the tales from Ancient Greece. Always have. Epic wars, tragic love stories, conniving gods and danger lurking around every corner. When I was researching STOLEN FURY (my 2010 double RITA nominee book), I found myself deeply immersed in the characters and narratives centered around the great culture, and I thought, “It would be really fun to develop an entire series based off these myths.” MARKED was the result, and the series grew from there. I love taking traditional myths and characters and shaping them into my world. I love the variety of people, beings and magic that can be found in the legends. I love being able to put my own spin on these classic tales and seeing where they take me.

In my series, the Eternal Guardians are battling an evil goddess who was once a hero like them but sold her soul to Hades for immortality. She’s cunning, dark and willing to do whatever she can to reach her goal. But she’s not the only villain in this series. There are many devious gods and goddesses in addition to mythological beings skulking in the shadows, waiting for their chance to shine.

And of course, there are plenty of hot guys. At least seven, to be exact. A few more who hang on the periphery and are as intriguing as the warriors themselves. So far I can guarantee at least five books in the series. From there I foresee more books so long as readers are anxious to read more.

To celebrate the release of ENTWINED, I’ve got a copy of the book to give away today. Simply tell me, what’s your favorite myth from Ancient Greece. And don’t forget to run out and get your copy of ENTWINED this week!

Happy Reading!

Elisabeth

Tuesday Type Blather and Junk

After the last several months, I’m now catching up on a thousand things. My burgeoning email backlog – this made worse by the fact that our old desktop got a virus and it fried all my outlook files, my folders and my calendar – so I’m not ignoring you, I just may have lost your email forever. Sigh.

Working on proposals this week. Finished Once Bitten – Nathan Murphy’s book and sent it to my editor so I hope she likes it. Today I should wrap up As Is – Adrian’s book and then move to the proposal for Captivated, the last Phantom Corps book and then I need to work on Gibson’s book proposal (need a title, but I have it loosely plotted).

And then it’s back to work on books – my holiday novella with Carina, Believe – which will follow October’s Second Chances is up first and then I’m at work on Goddess With a Blade. (and then the first Bound By Magic book after that)

So lots to do! But the lovely thing is that several of these projects are books I’ve loved and wanted to write for years and they finally get their day. It makes the process special and I am thrilled to get to write them at long last.

I’ve got some stuff ruminating around that I’ll be commenting on in some Writerly posts – I’ve got a request to talk about the proposal process from the perspective of someone who’s been published a while and I also want to talk about promotion and social networking.

But for now, I’ve got to finish this proposal so I’m off again. Come back tomorrow when Elisabeth Naughton will be my guest here at the blog!

He has the one thing she never thought she deserved. A place to belong…

De La Vega Cats, Book 2

At long last, Kendra Kellogg has found her sister—but she’s no closer to filling the gaps in her past. The magick that brought them together makes them targets for dark mages intent on finishing what started with their mother’s murder.

As if her life wasn’t chaotic enough, in barrels the one thing she doesn’t expect, Max de La Vega. He’s six-and-a-half-feet of cocoa-brown alpha male. He’s strong, intelligent, sexy and intense. Everything she’d wanted in a man. And he scares the hell out of her. Still healing from a disastrous past relationship, she wonders if she’ll ever have that kind of forever.

The next in line to run his jaguar jamboree, Max is unused to hearing “no”. Once he knows what he wants, he assumes he’ll get it. And he wants Kendra. She deserves happiness and it’s his mission to give it to her.

When dark mages attempt to steal her magickal energy, Max’s cat agrees with the man—Kendra is his to protect and he will stop at nothing to keep her safe. She can push him away as hard as she likes, he’s not going anywhere.

Releasing July 20

Max knew the moment she’d finished, felt the subtle and delicious shift of her magick. He loved that about her. She was rich and spicy with power, a scent so heady it made him drunk whenever he was around her.

The first time he’d laid eyes on Renee’s sister he’d been hooked. Hooked on her scent. The sound of her voice. Her prickly demeanor. Oh how he loved that she could be so bitchy. She was a woman who would brook no bullshit, though he had the feeling she hadn’t always been so.

As a human, even being a powerful witch wouldn’t overcome the prejudice some of his jamboree would feel about her. As such, any woman he’d bring home who wasn’t a shifter needed a strong will. When he brought her home the first time, and he would, she’d need to set the tone. He’d talk with Renee about it, knew his parents would be behind the relationship, as would Galen and Gibson. The rest would be hers to win over or scare into leaving her alone.

He had a plan for the future of his jamboree. A plan to leave behind the rules that reinforced the prejudices of the past. Kendra would be integral to that, a partner in the future of his people.

Kendra was it for him. The person he’d been waiting for. His father had always told Max he’d know it when he finally met the right woman. Mainly Max had thought that had been a bunch of woo-woo bullshit.

Until Kendra

He’d been dating someone until right after she’d come to town. It’d taken him a little while to be sure his attraction to Kendra wasn’t just about her ass, and God knew it was the finest ass in all creation. Damn he loved each and every mouth-watering curve Kendra Kellogg possessed. Once he’d known it was more than chemicals dancing around between them, he’d broken things off neatly and carefully and given himself some time between the breakup and the asking out. Not that he’d stopped thinking about her, or that he hadn’t spent every moment creating a plan of attack. He was, after all, a predator.

Now it was time. He didn’t like it that they didn’t share enough intimacy to have him come into her apartment and have him stay the night. If she’d been a Were, things would have been different. She’d have either bloodied him for getting too close, or pounced on him if she wanted him. She wasn’t a Were though, she was human and his behavior needed to reflect that. He wanted her to be totally safe, totally comfortable, and watching her just then sent his cat pacing with wanting her.

He stood, loving the way she greedily took in how he looked. Sending her a raised brow and a smile, he held a hand out. “Ready?”

Taking his hand, she sent him a look that went straight to his toes. “Thanks. I’m sorry you have to run me home. I’m sure you have to be tired too.”

“It’s my pleasure to take you home, Kendra. I only need about four hours sleep each night anyway. I’m often up at four so I can work out before I go to the office.” He walked her out, sending Galen an annoyed look when he hugged Kendra. Gibson, of course, saw the look and delighted in not only hugging Kendra, but kissing her cheek.

“Come on, let’s get you home so you can rest a little before you have to be at work.” He shot Gibson a raised brow, promising retribution as they walked past. His brother, nonplussed, rolled his eyes and flipped Max off. Punk.

He wanted to drag out his time with her, but saw the fatigue written into her face. “You’re not getting enough rest,” he said as he stopped at a red light.

“It’ll be better in a few weeks, once I get myself situated here better.” She blew that little lie with a yawn.

“How’s school?”

Kendra had recently started teaching a third/fourth grade combo class at a private magnet school. He knew the school was very prestigious. The judge he was appearing before in just a few hours had two kids who went there.

“I haven’t been there long enough to know a whole lot, but from the experiences I’ve had so far, it’s really good. I’m lucky to have the opportunity to work with the rest of the faculty and the students. It’s a sister school to the one I taught at back in California, so it gave me a bit of weight in the hiring process. The opening was right exactly what I needed and where I’d fit best.” She shrugged. “It was meant to be.”

“Yeah. I think so too.”

He pulled up in front of her building. It was a decent enough place, had been Jack’s before so it would be safe, though probably smelled of wolf. Max managed to hold back a sneer. Not that he didn’t like wolves. He just didn’t want his woman smelling like one, a male one who’d mated with his brother and sister-in-law.

He could get past that part because he knew for sure she’d be safe there. The place was also close to Renee, which was important to Kendra. Near the T stop she took to the school since her car had been stolen. Well lit, though he’d been looking for those little fuckers who’d stolen her car. He would find them eventually. Gibson was on it. No one stole from their people and got away with it. He hated the very idea of her being without a car, even in a city as mass transit friendly as Boston. And he really hated that she’d been taken advantage of by thugs.

“Is Renee going to be all right?” He sent her that damned raised brow when she moved to grab the door handle and she sighed heavily. “I’ll get the door.”

“It’s really not necessary,” she said as he opened it for her.

“Of course it isn’t necessary.”

“So you’re doing it why?”

He laughed, brushing her hair from her face. “Because I want to do it. I like doing it.”

“Oh. Why?”

“So full of questions. Because I want to take care of you. It pleases me.”

Her frown was more of confusion than anger or fear. She had the sweetest line between her eyes, most likely from her tendency to wear every single emotion on her face. Not that he’d say so. Females tended to get pissed off when you pointed out any wrinkle, even if it was one he wanted to smooth away with his lips.

“It does? Well then. I…” Fascinating. He’d flustered her. He didn’t resist his desire to slide his thumb over that line between her eyes.

She relaxed, slightly leaning into his touch, most likely not even knowing it. “No need to say anything. Right now anyway. Time for rest.”

She shook her head with a sigh, apparently letting go of whatever it was she was going to say. “Renee is fine. The wards are holding. She’s growing and her control of her power is also growing. I gave the place a look, there’s nothing inside that’s bad. She’s just remembering things. I’m sure Galen told you.”

“Some.” He frowned, hating that she and Renee had to shovel the emotional shit their piece-of-crap father had left in his wake.

“The memories she’s regaining, well…” Kendra paused, the pain on her face. “I hate to say it, but for a time anyway, it was better she didn’t know all this. Probably kept her safe. What could she do as a child with that anyway? But she’s not that child anymore and she’s fine now. Stronger than most people assume.”

He brushed his thumb over the dark smudges under her eyes. What he really wanted to do was to pick her up and take her to his house. Wanted to get her a mug of tea, a hot bath, a massage and lots of sleep. Oh and sex. But mainly the taking-care part because she needed it.

“You’re both strong. Now, I’m walking you to your door.”

“It’s really fine. My place is safe.”

“I’m sure it is,” he murmured as he hustled her up the steps, waiting for her to unlock the outer door. ”

You’re just going to leave your car?”

“We went over this before.” She snorted.

“Some people have all the luck.”

Snippet Saturday – Playlist

Today’s theme is music and as I’ve said more than a few times, I love music. It’s a huge part of my creative process and my every day life. My contemporary series with Berkley Heat (some call it the Brown Family series) is very much inspired by music. This series is heavily influenced by chunky rock like Kings of Leon (I always think of them as Brody’s favorite band), Foo Fighters and Them Crooked Vultures, along with the singer songwriter vibe of Ani Difranco (who is always Erin in my head) and Patty Griffin (who is Ella to me, her voice, the sadness in her voice, the strength).

So in November’s INSIDE OUT – Ella and Cope start to send each other letters and packages back and forth. In the book, Ella makes her own special Cope Playlist and sends it to him in her own version of a mixtape. When I wrote Ella, especially her POV when she thought about Cope, these are the songs that kept coming back to me.

Everlong – Foo Fighters
The Babys – Head First
Stone Temple Pilots – Still Remains
Lost Without U – Robin Thicke
The Wait – The Pretenders
When It Don’t Come Easy – Patty Griffin
Manhattan – Kings of Leon
Caligulove – Them Crooked Vultures
Birds – Kate Nash
Black Cherry – Goldfrapp
#1 Crush – Garbage
The First Taste – Fiona Apple
Mercy – Duffy
Ain’t Nobody – Chaka Khan
No One’s Gonna Love You – Band of Horses
Little Plastic Castle – Ani DiFranco
Gravel – Ani DiFranco
Fix You Up – Tegan and Sara

To give you a taste of a few:

Patty Griffin’s When It Don’t Come Easy – this song is wholly Ella to me. Her strength and her commitment to those she loves

Stone Temple Pilots – Still Remains (a personal favorite)

Ani Difranco – Little Plastic Castle

Kate Nash – Birds

Robin Thicke – Lost Without U

Kings of Leon – Manhattan
