Samhain IS open to Submissions…

Samhain is open to submissions.

In the most recent issue of the RWA’s Pro newsletter (Prospects) it was reported that Samhain is closed to submissions. We’re unsure where the erroneous information came from, but we are not closed to submissions and have no plans to be. We continue to accept submissions in all genres of romance, as well as science fiction/fantasy/urban fantasy all with romantic elements. Submissions guidelines can be found http://samhainpublishing.com/submissions. All questions and submissions can be directed to editor@samhainpublishing.com

We hope you’ll help us out by posting this correction on your local and specialty chapter loops.

Thank you!

Snippet Saturday – First Kiss

This time, I chose the scene where Nell Hunter and William Emery kiss for the first time in my novella, SENSUAL MAGIC from the What Happens in Vegas…After Dark Anthology. Don’t forget to look at the end of the excerpt for a llist of the authors participating today…

The excerpt has one or two bad words in it so I’m putting it behind a text jump. Read the rest of this entry ?

Writerly Wednesday

Just a quick break from writing to pop in and post.

In all the talk about promotion online and with author groups, one thing I feel is neglected is: What is the PURPOSE of promotion?

I think it’s really important to ask yourself that question as an author. There is no end to the amount of time and money you can spend on promotion. But most of us don’t have an unlimited supply of either, moreover, it’s important to be smart with your time and money so what I do with each book is create a plan for that book. I lay out how much things will cost and go into details and timelines so I can keep it all straight. I find I spend way less money and time if I do this up front so I’m not rushing around at the last minute doing triage.

But the basis for all this work is what I am trying to promote – my writing. It spans more than one story, it’s about what I will write, what I have written and what’s out just now.

In my opinion (and that’s all this is, there’s no one true way or I’d be selling you all DVDs or whatever) – Promotion is never only about that book. If you try to think on it that way, I am not sure you’d ever get your “money’s worth” from it. It’s impossible to quantify either way – but I believe promotion should be far more long term and big picture, just like a career. Promotion, while it is about that book, should be about the author.

What I mean by that is your career is more than about one book. Sure, you want that book to do well and sure, to benefit the author, the book needs to do well. But, to narrow your focus is to leave out some of your most powerful tools.

You’re hopefully growing a reader base, giving them a reason to come back to you again, to seek out your backlist, etc. Approaching promotion with a concrete idea of what promotion is and should be, and of how you’ll use it to get yourself out there without spamming, wasting money like water or being totally ineffective – will give you a direction. Later on you can see what seemed to be effective and what wasn’t. (and here I’d like to interject that recommending your own book to me at goodreads or sending me eleventy billion invites to be your fan are not effective. This is counterproductive and it makes MY job harder because everyone distrusts authors on facebook so I’m painted with that same brush even though I’d never do that)

I’ve noticed authors grumbling when they are asked to do marketing plans. I do a marketing plan for each book and I include things like chats, guest blogging, contests, etc as well as ads. A marketing plan can help you focus on the target, it can help you think on just what that target/goal is.

I believe promotion is not only helpful to an author, especially one trying to build a solid, long term career, but necessary. I know other authors disagree with this and the world is a wondrous place filled with all sorts of ideas and beliefs, that one is not mine. BUT, I believe promotion is done so haphazardly by a lot of authors that they dread it even more than they have to if it’s done with more care.

And that’s my Wednesday post. I’m off to write now.

Last Holiday Monday Before School Is Out

Yep, it’s that time of year again. My kids will be out of school in mid June and home with me, all day, every day. This year they’re going to spend a few weeks with their Nana and Poppa, which should be great fun for them. Hopefully, my parents will eat their wheaties and take their vitamins, LOL.

The weekend was lovely. We have had absolutely gorgeous weather, sunny and right around 70 degrees (that’s hot for us this time of year). They did a volcano outside with dad while I finished up the last pass through of Coming Undone before sending it back to my editor. I’m relieved to have that part over and tomorrow I’ll get back to Trinity. My plan is to have Trinity finished up and polished and off to Angie before I leave for National in mid-July. Then on to Insatiable, my next Federation Chronicles Novel (yes, just last week we decided on this title for the series).

I hope everyone had a lovely weekend! I’m off to be sure everyone’s clothes are ready for tomorrow!

Snippet Saturday – Defining Moments…

(This was supposed to post at 6 am eastern. And it would have if I’d done it for the 23rd and not the 26th, sigh)

Today’s theme is: Defining moments. I love defining moments, those points where the character or the story turns and clicks. Don’t forget to click the links at the bottom of the excerpt to read the other participating authors’ excerpts today!

I chose an excerpt from Cascadia Wolves: Standoff – when Grace decides to take a huge risk and meet with Nationall Allied Wolves to help them against her brother – but far more than that happens at their first face to face meeting.

It’s long so I’ve put it behind a text jump…

Checking In…

I’m bordering on brain dead right now. I’ve pushed to write around the kids today and I’ve been very happy with the results, but for some reason today it has really tired me out more than usual.

Still, I am so happy with where I am in Trinity. I feel like I’ve hit my stride with it and the writing is easier.

Favorite lines of the day: She looked up, into his face, met his eyes and smiled. “Did you have a request?”

“My cock does and I’m its spokesperson.”

She laughed. “I suppose it wants to go to Target to get some socks.”

I had a lot of reader mail today – here are a few things -

Not all my books are erotic romances. By that I mean, some of them are what I’d term sensual romances while others are erotic romances. I got an angry letter this morning from a reader who felt there was not nearly enough sex in my Chase books and she was upset about that. I see my books all being referred to as “erotica” on the reader sites like goodreads and then people take their frustration out in the reviews if they feel like they didn’t know.

All I can say is this – I certainly hope readers like all my books. I hope readers enjoy the couples and their stories. While everyone has preferences, I’d like to think all my books have a lot of sensuality in them, even if they are not classified as “erotic.”

But – it’s totally okay to only want to read red hots, or to not want to read red hots and only want to read sensual romances. The books ARE labeled – which should be of help.

My Chase Brothers series are NOT labeled as “Red Hot” via Samhain. They are simply classified as “contemporary romance” Always – also a contemporary romance. My Cascadia Wolves, the holiday shorts, etc – those are classified as red hots/erotic romance.

All my EC books are erotic romances because that’s what the publisher puts out. My Berkley Heat books are also erotic romances – again, it’s an erotic line much like Spice and Black Lace is. Those books are erotic romances and are labeled that way.

I try to be sure to give people the tools with which to make their choices – the labels on the books themselves are the first key and I’m fortunate to say so far, the labels have been correct (sometimes I notice things classified as one thing or other and I feel like the terms are not accurate).

Just a little FYI that I hope is helpful!

Good News!

Just a quick break from writing to announce that I’ve sold RIGHTEOUS BLADE to Samhain for release in September of 2010. Righteous Blade is urban fantasy/paranormal romance and in a totally new world. I’m beyond thrilled! More about the book soon…

And I also received news from my editor that RELENTLESS is a national bestseller! It’s been on the BGI and Barnes and Noble lists for a few weeks now. So thank you all who’ve picked it up!

Back to work for me!

I’m Here

Just working on Trinity and finishing up other stuff too. I’m working on a post about words and definitions but I’m too sleepy to do it any justice today.

Instead I invite you to check out some of the books in my recently read and currently reading pile!

Charlaine Harris – Dead and Gone – I do love Harris’s voice. I love the setting (I really love small southern town stuff) and I love the world. She’s unfolding all this stuff slowly and deliberately and she never ceases to impress me with her plotting (even in the books that aren’t my faves in the series, she’s still awesome). I dug Dead and Gone though the hardback thing – admittedly, when I read a book in hardback I’m a far harsher judge. I want a good, thick book with a great story. I think the story is great. I like how she moved Sookie forward, I like the Fairy stuff, I loved more Eric, I like the meta story about all the paranormals trying to figure out how to be out, or if they should. It’s actually a very complicated, gray world and I love how she writes it.

I didn’t think there was enough closure on the issue of Bill v Eric, though I like that Harris gives Sookie a direction and I approve of it. I’m still thinking there’s a bit too much of the other guy and I worry it’ll come back again. I didn’t think it was too short, but I’d have loved some more details. Still, I think she did an awesome job and I anxiously await the new Harper book out later this year.

I’m also about 3/4 through Jeri Smith Ready’s follow up to last year’s Wicked Game – BAD TO THE BONE – I’m so not disappointed! This is a really good book. Jeri Smith Ready has written a fascinating world with her own stamp on it. This is not a world you’ve seen a hundred times but it has elements from many of my favorite sorts of genres and stories.

Ciara is a protag you can really like. She’s not perfect, she’s not mad all the time for no apparent reason, she’s not perpetually fourteen and whiny – she’s a person who has dealt with a lot of crap in her life and she’s not broken. She’s wounded, but she deals and she lives and she isn’t afraid to be happy. There are no faked up conflict moments where I read and think, “why is she doing this?” The conflict is real and believable and I really can’t get enough of this world.

This is just two. There are more but I need to get back to work so I’ll also be talking about my contemporary romance binge very soon.

Have a good Tuesday!
