Nothing But Red

Monday was the release day for a really special charity project, Nothing But Red.

The purpose of Nothing But Red is to bring attention to the issue of violence against women worldwide, as well as the continuing need for equality, through art—both written and visual—and by raising money for a charity that strives to help women of all faiths, ethnicities, and socioeconomic backgrounds, with the support of dedicated volunteers who share a desire to promote equality.

From the Press Room section of the Nothing But Red website:

Nothing But Red, the anthology of literary and visual arts inspired by the impassioned plea of Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon in response to the “honor killing” of 17-year-old Du’a Khalil Aswad, is now available for purchase. Sales of the anthology, which is currently available in multiple formats at www.lulu.com/nothingbutred, will benefit the international human rights organization Equality Now.

“I’ve met some amazing people who’ve worked incredibly hard to put this book together over the last year, whether as contributors or volunteers,” said Skyla Dawn Cameron, originator and editor-in-chief of Nothing But Red. “We can’t change Du’a’s fate – but we can let the world know that there are people who still care. That’s where this fight really happens: with each of us, challenging ourselves to do something to make the world better.”

The 313-page collection, which can be purchased as a trade paperback for $15.95 or as a pdf-format e-book for $5.95, is being released on the one-year anniversary of the death of Aswad. An Iraqi adherent of the Yazidi religion, Aswad was stoned to death by family members and neighbors; her brutal beating and murder was captured in a graphic video and spread on the Internet.

Shortly after learning of the murder, Joss Whedon, creator of the television shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly, penned an emotional response on the website Whedonesque.com. His post, which built from the topic of Aswad’s murder to the contemplation of misogyny’s transcendence of culture, religion and era, ended on an appeal to his fans to do something active to change the cycle.

“True enlightened activism is the only thing that can save humanity from itself…” Whedon wrote. “Her face was nothing but red.”

Taking its title from those words, Nothing But Red is a response to Whedon’s call to action, which is included as an essay in the volume. A full list of contributors can be found at nothingbutred.wordpress.com.

Equality Now was chosen as the recipient of the anthology’s proceeds due to Whedon’s public support of the organization and its mission to “[voice] a worldwide call for justice and equality for women,” as stated on Equality Now’s website.

Please buy a copy of Nothing But Red and help raise awareness for violence against women. Visit www.lulu.com/nothingbutred to purchase your copy! The full colour eBook is $5.95, and the black and white trade paperback is $15.95. All profits (about $4 per book) will go to Equality Now.

Monday, April 7th, 2008

I had dinner last night with an old friend who is now back up in the Seattle area and it was such a nice time! I’ve missed her so much and it’s going to be lovely having her around on a regular basis. We went to Salty’s at Redondo Beach and I had salmon and she had the halibut and we halved it and it was sooooooooo good! Then the waiter brought us creme brulee and a slice of cake because it was a celerbration for both our birthdays (mine past hers to come in two weeks). A lovely time.

Then I watched No Country For Old Men with my husband and dude, that movie is a mindfuck. Amazing acting, but you certainly don’t walk away with a shiny, happy feeling at the end, LOL. And even with Prince Valiant hair, Javier Bardem is hot. Even as a sociopath he’s hot. I’m probably totally mental, but still.

I’m still at work on Fated - I’m nearing the halfway mark so I’m quite pleased with that.

I hope everyone is enjoying their Monday!

Posting From Mt. Laundry…

gah, so busy today!~ Since I’ll be gone for RT I’m trying to get everyone squared away and prepared so I’ve been dealing with laundry, ironing, cleaning and packing for myself all day. Man I can’t believe how much stuff we have.

Saw a Harriet Klausner review of Vegas where she called my character an exotic dancer and pretty much made it look like she was turning tricks on the side. That’s so the opposite of the storyline I’m appalled. Sigh. Ah well, such is life.

All right, back to work. Dinner and then more freaking laundry. I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Celebration For The Dead is Now Available!!!

Blurb: Vampire Hunter Minx Rodriguez decides to mix a little business with pleasure when she heads to Mexico to celebrate El Dia de los Muertos. She’s hot on the trail of the vampire who not only took her hostage and tortured her but also killed her friends and family.

Connor Bell finds himself in love with a Vampire Hunter who’s skipped town without notice — much like he did to her just two weeks before. He heads to Mexico to find her and make things right.

Even as they work through their problems and plan a feast to celebrate the lives of those they’ve lost to the Oathbreakers, the threat remains. A Hunter’s job is never done and there’s a job to do in Mexico. The question remains as to whether Minx and Connor can survive what’ll be asked of them both.

And the lovely Dannette is having me at her blog today so stop over to say hello and enter yourself into a contest to win a book!

Witches Knot: Celebration for the Dead

So tomorrow, the first Witches Knot book in a year will come out from Ellora’s Cave and I’m pretty excited about it. Witches Knot was the first universe I wrote, when I created Triad in 2004. Since then it’s encompassed a lot of things I hadn’t envisioned when I first sold Triad but I’ve loved writing it and I’ve really loved the Charvez witches and all their family and friends.

In Vengeance Due, I brought readers into Aidan’s secret - that there were vampires who weren’t so warm and fuzzy. Vampires who in fact broke the oath that kept the rest of their kind in check. Into town sweeps a group of humans who hunt these oathbreakers. Kael Gardener and his crew of hunters comes to New Orleans and meets Simone Charvez and of course those of you who’ve read Vengeance Due know, Kael and Simone get their HEA after some major angst and oodles of emo.

At the same time, one of the hunters, Minx (Melanie Rodriguez) meets Aidan’s brother Connor, a cop of sorts and a slow romance begins.

Celebration for the Dead takes place not too long after Vengeance Due ends (which is before Thrice United, confused yet?) and it takes us to Las Brisas, Mexico for El Dia de Los Muertos and right smack dab into the middle of a fight between Minx and Connor and he’s got some making up to do and Anton Perdue is back…

I’ve started a post today like five times but to be honest, I’m really pissed off by some unprofessional behavior which is unfortunately affecting me and so I can’t say anything without just throwing down, which is in and of itself unprofessional. So I will pass and instead leave you with something pretty to look at…

What Happens In Vegas (contesty Type Goodness)

NOTE: AS OF APRIL 29, 2008 THE CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED! THANK YOU TO EVEYONE WHO ENTERED AND YOU CAN SEE A LIST OF THE WINNERS BELOW.

You wanna know what happens? Well, you’ll have to read the upcoming anthology featuring what Loveromances calls: Fasten your seatbelt, because four of the best authors of the erotic romance genre take you on a wicked and wild trip to Sin City.

Now, here’s the thing - you can wait until May 1 when the book comes out or come by the Pittsburgh Hilton on Saturday April 19 and get one there.  OR

You can enter to win one of the shiny, pretty author copies I received.

If you choose the latter, simply use the handy dandy contact form at my website and be sure to put VEGAS CONTEST in the subject line.  I’ll begin choosing winners at random, oh any old time I want to and up through they’re gone. Just make a note of where you’d be putting your review up (and no, it’s not going to make a difference if you post at Amazon v a review blog) - it just helps me to know where things may be going up.

Is there a catch? Not really. What I would like is if you’d put up a review of the anthology either at your blog, another review blog or at Amazon or Barnes and Noble.com.  A good review is obviously desirable but not required - all four of us want you to love our stories but we want you to be honest too.

So that’s it - you want a free, early copy, enter to win!!  I’ll be notifying winners via email so be sure the address you use is valid.  ONE ENTRY PER PERSON PER HOUSEHOLD PLEASE

All Winners Have Been Notified By Email!

The swag I ordered for RT arrived and it’s so super awesome! This is something just for the folks attending our reader party on Friday and for some of the baskets I’m doing. They turned out so well, I’m totally thrilled…
