Tuesday Stuff, Threat of Darkness, Wordcount, Etc…

I finished editing and revising Reading Between The Lines and sent it to my editor, wheee! I’m also up 1305 words yesterday when I began to input all my edits, etc. Tonight I’ll start on Wolf Unbound but I’ve got a book releasing tomorrow and my sister-in-law is coming over to hang out a while with my nephew so the middle part of the day I’ll be making sure no kids kill each other in the back yard.

All told, in the first 15 days of the 70 Days of Sweat Challenge, I’ve written 40,081 words! WHHEEEEE!

Threat of Darkness releases tomorrow from Ellora’s Cave! This is Jayce’s story. Many of you have written to me over the last two years since we met Jayce in a Touch of Fae, asking for his book and so you get it. He’s got to share his story, and his life with Mei nia Aine and Cardinian Leviathan but they’ve both got a lot to say and add to Jayce’s life too. This is related to the Witches Knot series, you’ll see some familiar faces, but it’s standalone and a different group of people for the most part. I hope everyone enjoys this book as much as I enjoyed writing it. This was one of those tricksy books that wants to be something and then you try to fight it because you have other ideas but it won’t fit into the box! I re-started this book from scratch twice because it kept trying to be a menage and I wanted it to be about Jayce and Mei. Once I gave in and let it be a menage, the story just flowed and was really easy to write. I have a very bossy imagination apparently.

A brief excerpt is behind the “more” cut… 18 and over only please.

Sunday….

Nearly finished with my paper edits on Reading Between the Lines. It’s always hard to know what a story really is until you let it lie for a week or so and then pick it up again. Thank god it makes sense and flows and all that stuff, LOL. I love this couple, Haley and Conall are a lot of fun and Haley really transforms in some ways from start to finish, she’s got to deal with a lot of stuff so her journey was a challenge to write in an authentic way. I think I did it though!

Threat of Darkness releases on Wednesday from Ellora’s Cave. For everyone who’s written me in the last two years asking when I planned to do a story for Jayce macTavish, who we meet in A Touch of Fae - here you go. This is Jayce’s story along with Mei and Card’s as well. Yes, a menage. I did not plan for this book to be a menage. In fact, I re-wrote it from scratch twice but Card wouldn’t let go of Mei! And once I just threw my hands up and said, “Fine! Just do what you want.” and mumbled about them all being so ungrateful, the story really sped along for me. I suppose there’s a lesson in there about just writing the story that wants to be written. And in truth, I absolutely love this book and it turned out better than I’d even imagined.

To celebrate, A List Mom Day!

There’s a contest at The Bradford Bunch and The Dynamic Trio - you may want to check that out. And check in tomorrow for a contest here as well!!

70 Days wise - With my faboo numbers, I’m ahead of the numbers and I’m mainly editing right now. I’ll get some word count when I start to input all my edits and I’ll update then. I’ll be back to writing again by mid week.

OH and a tip - when your nearly 3 year old comes up to you and says, “here momma!” look at what she’s giving you before you take it. Just trust me on that…

Friday Booktalk

I managed to read two books this week. Well, okay I had two DNF but I’m not talking about them. Both of these books are ones I picked up at RT in April.

First up, Maria Lima’s Matters of the Blood. This one is a Juno book. I hadn’t tried anything from this new publisher but I was very pleased with Matters of the Blood and if you look at my TBR picture below you’ll see Saska Walker’s The Strangleing is another Juno title I’ve got waiting.

Back to the subject - Matters of the Blood is a paranormal thriller/suspense of sorts with a romantic subplot. We get a glimpse into Kiera’s world where supernatural creatures exist but stay hidden from human eyes and in some cases from other supernaturals. She’s on the verge of a change where she’ll come into her power. It’s a sort of wildcard thing and she doesn’t know what she’ll be with her change is over - a shifter, a clairvoyant, etc. This part was a bit unclear to me and I wanted more about what she was, about what she came from and what her family was. The hints were delicious but at times I felt a bit lost.

Kiera’s character is strong and intelligent, nicely drawn. Three dimensional. Lima tells the story in first person and it works for this story quite well. Adam, her past crush of sorts, shows up in the small Texas hill town Kiera lives in and guards her human cousin mainly from himself.

Animals end up mutilated, people are dying and Kiera has to deal with her impending change, a visit from her brother sent by her overbearing grandmother to help and a growing attraction to the very mysterious and sexy Adam who’s got a big secret of his own.

The town is an imaginative setting and I loved the originality of it. I enjoyed the action and mystery a lot as well and I hope Lima has another chapter planned to tie up some loose ends that left me wanting to hear a lot more about these people.

And Sylvia Day’s Pleasures of the Night - I love Sylvia Day’s writing. I love her voice and I think she’s a really talented sex writer. Pleasures of the Night is my very favorite Avon Red title so far (which says a lot given the extraordinarily talented authors in their line).

The universe of dreamers, guardians and nightmares Day has created is wonderfully creative and fresh. The interaction between Lyssa and Aidan is, guh, whee! HOT! Lyssa is a marvelously drawn heroine, I loved her. I loved her strength and yay, oh so freaking yay for a heroine who loves sex! She’s no shrinking violet and when Aidan needs help, she risks everything to get it to him.

Aidan Cross, sigh. What a freaking hero. Okay, my weakness is admittedly, the dark haired warrior type who’s all gruff but adores the heroine. Aidan is that and more. He’s also a dirty talker. What? When it’s done well, I think it’s hotter than fire and Day does it well.

The backstory about the key, the mystery of what it is, who and what the guardians are and what they might be hiding and the conceptual moving between worlds is done really well here and Day has given readers the beginning of a fresh new paranormal world with the potential to have more stories of some of the very delicious warriors she introduced us to.

Finished and TBR

I finished Wolf Unbound last night. I thought I’d finish the night before but one scene came to me that I hadn’t anticipated, which works out anyway!

I’d been aiming for roughly 70K and with about 3K left, I think it may end up there after revision. I’m really thrilled with where this book took me. When I wrote Enforcer, it started as an idea for a novella for a dangerous jobs type anthology. It didn’t get chosen but my editor said she loved the idea and would love to see it expanded into a novel and though I couldn’t get back to it for another year or so, when I did, the idea shifted into what is probably in the top five of my favorite books I’ve written. I had no idea then that the werewolf mafia thing would be this overarching story arc in all four books but it all really came into focus when I wrote Tri-Mates. Wolf Unbound is Tegan’s story. You don’t see a lot of her in the previous books but her story really called to me. What happens when a wolf loses her mate when she’s very young? What would that do to you if your anchor bond had also found their mate so your life was saved but the hole in your heart kept you from living fully?

She’s not an easy character and neither is Ben Stoner, the stoic cop she ends up with. By the end of the book, the Packs are in dissaray and the horizon is dark with what may come. I can’t wait to start writing Standoff now - Cade’s book and the last in the series.

Now I’ll put it aside and finish up final revisions on Reading Between the Lines! Wheeee!

And possibly, I’ll have more time to tackle this:

TBR Pile

My TBR Pile. Not pictured Susanna Carr’s, Pink Ice, Cheyenne McCray’s, Chosen Prey, A mystery antho called Most Likely to Die, Jennifer Dunne’s Fugitive Lovers, a Blaze antho called Boys of Summer and Secrets Volume 8. On my hard drive I’ve got - Charlene Teglia’s Wild Wild West ARC, Marissa Scott’s When Petals Fall, Michelle Pillow’s Date with Destiny and her book with Mandy Roth - Red Light Specialists and Megan Hart’s Gilt and Midnight (her upcoming Spice Brief for September)(there are others scattered but these are my two main piles)

I will say I’ve finished Sylvia Day’s Pleasures of the Night and I’ll talk about it in a minute for Friday Booktalk, and also Maria Lima’s Matters of the Blood (ditto talking about in a minute). As you can see, I’ve got a huge amount of reading to catch up on! I hope I can use a bit of free time this summer to do it.

Professionalism

Professionalism. Okay, let’s talk about being a professional for a moment since it’s the topic of the moment (super fabulous discussion over at Smart Bitches, by the way - as per usual because they are smart cookies as well as smart bitches)

Professionalism - I get my manuscripts in on time and I do my level best to be sure they’re clean and will be easy to edit. I reply to communication from my editor, agent, publisher and readers in a timely manner. In my communication with them, I remain professional - I don’t use text speak (although I do say “dude” to my agent and Angie but not at first until they knew me). I work my ass off to promote my books in a professional manner. I don’t drive by promo spam on loops. I don’t make every comment about me and my books. I work hard to sell well and to be responsive to my market and my readers. In public I don’t slag off other authors, I don’t slag off reviewers or reviews, I don’t slag off publishers, editors, etc. I may express dismay over something like the recent RWA ruling or when a letter shows up in RWR or RT slamming gays or erotic romance or what have you, but I’m going to try very hard to do so without getting raw and crossing lines even while being professional. I NEVER drag readers into my professional issues.

I show up for promotional events early. I do my part in promoting the event. I bring treats. I work well with others at events. I am polite and orderly and I act according to the situation. For example - at Babeland I did a reading with several other wonderful erotic romance authors. This is an adult toystore, I read sex scenes. At Borders I wouldn’t generally do a reading but if I did, I’d choose an action scene or an emotional scene without sex. At a conference I’d also read non-sex scenes unless the reading was specifically geared toward sex writing.

I always dress up for promotional events because well, it’s about image and to a certain extent, Lauren Dane is a character. Some people won’t like that or don’t agree but to me, it’s true. When I am Lauren Dane at a promotional event, I am not the person I am at home. I’m not going to yell at my kids or wear sweats and show up with my hair shoved in a messy pony tail and wear flip flops. I am there in a context. I put on makeup, make sure my nails look good, etc. I have a few outfits I love, most of them are vintage looking because I love the way 40s and 50s inspired clothing looks on me. Feminine and sexy but not overblown. I feel pretty and comfortable in it. If it’s a signing and I’ll be there a while, I try to go for comfortable, a pretty sweater, nice pants, etc. I thought in the future I’d probably dress up more for signings though (although I’ll still bring treats, I promise).

There’ve been some rumblings in romancelandia about how “unprofessional” it is to dress up in costumes for promotional events and I disagree. Firstly, as I said, I believe we’re all in costume anyway and secondly, because dressing up is fun and if an author can do it and feel comfortable with it, why not? I resent the idea that Liz Maverick and Marianne Mancusi dressing up like their characters to promote their books and the fabulous new Shomi line at Dorchester was “unprofessional” and I really, really resent both women being referred to as prostitutes or “pedophile lure” because they took on the anime/manga look of the covers from the line.

Here’s a picture of their outfits at the signing. I hope they don’t mind that I’m putting it up here. They’re both clearly of age, neither of them looks slutty or “pedophile” bait. They’re clearly promoting their books and the characters (BTW, the covers of the Shomi books are fabulous).

Mainly at a signing, you sit at a table. People come to you with your book and you sign it, chat and really, it’s a very cool thing that anyone actually wants your book much less takes the time to come and get your signature. If Maverick and Mancusi felt comfortable in their costumes and didn’t get so drunk they couldn’t stand or puked in a trash can, I can’t see why anyone else would care what two authors out of 400 did.

When you’re in public, don’t get so drunk you pop someone in the nose. Don’t flash your girls at the waiter. Don’t tell Nora she’s wrong when she says she likes Heather Locklear. Don’t treat the staff with disrespect. Don’t snub people at the book signing. Be gracious, be who you are but with filters, laugh, enjoy and worry about your own behavior. Worrying about whether or not reviewers are allowed at RWA Nationals, worrrying about whether or not Sherrilyn Kenyon wears a swan on her head, worrying about Liz Maverick’s skirt length - it’s all just, well, none of your business and frankly, a waste of your time. For the record, I’ve been with Sherilyn Kenyon at a few cons with signings and you know what, her line is always long. People, READERS LOVE her. I’ve never seen her be anything less than gracious to her fans either and let me go on a limb and say a swan on her head isn’t really turning readers away from her or romance.

Romance is a HUGE genre. That’s our strength, not our detriment. There is room for the feather boas, the pink hats, the chiffon dresses as well as the costumes like Mancusi and Maverick wore - and everything in between. We all approach our writing differently. I don’t expect everyone to think the way I do about their careers. But I certainly don’t expect to be called a streetwalker because my view is different either. Professional does not mean bland, it doesn’t mean hateful attacks on the morals of the people who do things differently either. We can all do our thing without the sky falling.

I was over at The Dynamic Trio earlier this afternoon talking about how I’ve found myself in this very nice, nearly Zen space about my writing. I feel calm and positive. I’m not harried and rushed, I’m not blocked or feeling discouraged. I finished one book I love and I’m nearly finished with a second and when that’s done and they’re both edited and sent to Angie, I’ll start work on a project that’s 100% pleasure writing. I don’t know where it’ll go, I’m not thinking in terms of market. I’m not going to stop at the end of three chapters. I will write to the end, all for myself.

Right now, I’m good. I’m happy. I have books scheduled for release into May of next year. I realized the other day just how blessed I am. How much it means to me to be here in a place where I am doing what I love so much.

I honestly think it was starting the 70 Days of Sweat challenge that jump started this for me. It enabled me to put a focus on my writing from a different place. It brought me this fabulous productivity and I captured the feeling I hadn’t had in a while. I laid aside the stress of the wait, the anxiety of “will it sell” and I’m just writing. It won’t last forever, LOL, the anxiety is always there in some sense, but I’m taking this lovely feeling and embracing it while I can. To save up and use when I’m FUHHREEEKING! about something or other.

Idlewild -

A few years ago, Idlewild opened for the second leg of the Pearl Jam NA tour and I fell in love with them. Every night they’d come out, in dire need of a sandwich, and say, “We’re Idlewild and we’re from Scotland” and they’d end each set with this song. In Remote Part/Scottish Fiction

I wish more people knew who they were because they’re really good and it’s rare to hear a band who makes straighforward rock and roll. Not guitar rock, not EMO, but plain, direct rock and roll.

This song has kept my brain company while I wrote many a time - Live in A Hiding Place

And this one, Little Discourage, which has an actual real type video

More later on writing and stuff, but I wanted to go all fangirl for a moment…
