A Kiss To Remember Me…

Okay so I’m off at like, o’dark thirty to fly to Ohio for Lori Foster’s Reader/Author Gathering. I’m actually, gasp, leaving my laptop at home so I won’t be updating from the road. As such, I thought, hmmm, what could I leave you all with to last until Sunday or Monday?

Clive

Something to treat your eyes and make your heart beat just a little bit faster. First up, my celebrity boyfriend (okay, they all are) Clive Owen. Clive, who, other than my husband, can be found in a little bit of a lot of my heroes.

mmm Clive

And other because I can…

Gerard

Oh, sigh. It’s suddenly very hot in here as I remember a conversation I had with Megan on IM about a Gerry/Clive sandwich for Rowan in another book.

KILT

And you know what they say about what men wear under their kilts. Their leather kilts. Guh.

matthew

Make fun of naked bongo playing all you want people, but I can’t think of anyone I’d rather see naked and playing bongos than this man. Every small town cowboy character I’ve written has a bit of Matthew in him.

julian

Ai papi! Shiver. Oh Julian, sweet, sweet Julian…

Dominic

Look at Dominic! He’s so sad because he needs someone to scrub his back in the bathtub. All hot, covered in bubbles, his head drops back against the edge of the tub as his hand slides… okay, whoops!

So there you go. I can’t get my pictures of Lenny Kravitz and Oded Fehr to load right, sigh. So you can imagine them. Heh. So have a nice Friday and Saturday. I’ll do booktalk when I return.

Writerly Wednesday - Heroes And Heroines

Last week I wrote about fated mate storylines as a cliche that worked for me and why so I thought it would be fun to talk about contemporaries and cliches that worked (and didn’t) for me and why.

One of the reasons I love to write contemporaries is because the world is already shaped. The novelty for me lies in the characters and the situations they can endure/survive/create. Like paranormals, contemporaries are rife with cliches.

The power exchange - I’m going to write about this one next week!

Some character cliches that drive me out of my freaking mind - the shrill heroine who cries a lot but we’re told she’s spunky. The doormat heroine. The asshole alpha. The 35 year old virgin or the 35 year old who has always hated sex until the hero appears. The abusive hero and the heroine who eats it up with a spoon.

What walks the edge but works for me as a reader is the arrogant alpha. What I mean is not a man who’ll call the heroine a whore when he knocks her up because he was told at 17 he couldn’t have kids but then comes back and the baby has the family birthmark and all is forgiven HEA - whee, bleah.

What I mean is the man who is confident, dominant, totally sure of himself and protective. BUT, he *cherishes* the heroine. And a man like this needs a strong heroine. A really strong herione, not just someone we’re told is strong. Linda Howard writes this hero and sometimes she walks on that knife edge but she never falls to the wrong side of the line. Elizabeth Lowell - okay, my admission is that if anyone else wrote some of Lowell’s heroes I’d hate them. Granite Man? Seriously, I love that book but I don’t know what it is about her. She’s magic. She’ll write this man within a hair’s breadth of being an ass but whatever she does, holds him back that last bit and you love him instead.

He is not a momma’s boy (although he respects her if she’s in his life). He’s often either very moneyed or working hard to be so and might have a bit of a chip on his shoulder about it. There’s a lot of appeal in that millionaire businessman or the mechanic who wants to own his own shop. He’s mysterious, he’s aggressive and ambitious and usually wounded in some sense.

Which plays into heroine cliches - I *wish* there were more strong woman cliches I loved but mainly, there are more heroine cliches I hate. The biggest for me is the “saucy” heroine who is actually a whiner. urp. Seriously? I cannot deal with it. Don’t tell me she’s saucy and sassy and then have her weep every three pages. Don’t have her take the hero’s abuse and think it’s love. Don’t have her go in the damned basement with a serial killer on the loose when she’s not a warrior but a whiny college student with “a heart of gold” so she can get kidnapped and endanger everyone in the hero’s squadron or whatever. Just leave her with the serial killer! Then we can have a better heroine and one less stupid one.

I myself love a saucy heroine. A real saucy heroine. She doesn’t have to be mean or so independent she doesn’t need a partner but she’s got to be strong enough to handle herself and push back when the hero finally pushes one step too far. Do you know who writes great heroines? Nora Roberts. They’re real, they’ve got flaws and wounds and they will usually mess up, but they don’t just give up and let things *happen* to them. Take the sisters in her Born In books (my personal favorite Nora series) - each one is a totally different woman with her own insecurities and problems and each one has this man stumble into her life who presents all kinds of trouble, but none of them just throws her hands up and gives in.

I want to see a heroine who will help herself. I want to see redemption she earns on her own, not through the hero. By that I mean, yes, the hero can change her, help her, be her bridge to redemption but I want her to earn it herself. I think the antithesis of this is the plus sized heroine who only finds herself beautiful or worthy because the man sees her as such OR if she loses the weight. Show me a big girl who learns to love herself with the help of the hero not because of him, or even better, show me the heroine who already loves herself! (Min in Bet Me for instance - oh god do I love Jenny Crusie’s heroines!) Women can be self conscious, they can compare themselves to past lovers, etc, that’s natural, but a self loathing heroine who is totally well adjusted by “the end” because some dude wants to bone her? Um, no thanks.

Some of my favorite contemporary romance authors are: Alison Kent, Jo Leigh, Linda Howard, Nora Roberts, Jennifer Crusie (writes the most deliciously twisted heroines ever), Susan Elizabeth Phillips - okay, the list can go on and on! Tell me your favorites and also your favorite and most hated contemporary romance cliches!

Life

Yesterday we all went out and played a round of miniature golf at the Family Fun center. The day was gorgeous, sunny with a bit of a breeze. Morrigan had a blast and kept running in and just dropping her ball into the hole, throwing her hands up and saying, “I won!” The boys had fun too and my dude and I were kept busy keeping the three of them out of the water and other people’s play, LOL.

On the way home we stopped at Ben and Jerry’s and had ice cream. It’s not a good idea to have a scoop shop two miles from one’s house, I’m just sayin. Did you know they had cookie cones dipped in dark chocolate? Yeah, well neither did I but I do now. Sigh. DEEELICIOUS!

Of course my cool mom status was revoked when I confiscated someone’s nintendo DS for bad behavior. I was then in charge of making it the “worst day evar!” Wooo!

I wrote for a few hours and then my dude and I watched a movie and hung out, always a nice thing given how little couple time we get these days.

My boys are off at the movies to see Spiderman and the wee monster is watching Strawberry Shortcake. I wish I could say this movie was better than barbie rapunzel, but alas, I cannot. Even with the singing dragon, barbie has it by a nose over the annoying Strawberry shortcake and her ship of dreams.

Saturday Blather

Let’s see…I’m getting ready to go to Lori Foster’s Reader Author Get Together next weekend. I’ve never been so I’m really excited about it. I get to finally meet Barb and Pam in addition to many other authors and readers I’ve known online forever so that’ll be wonderful. I also get to see the ever-so-wonderful Anya Bast, who I just love to death and I haven’t seen her since October so I can’t wait! I’ll be at the book signing on Saturday, June 2 from 4 - 6 at the hotel (Cincinnati Marriot North) so come by and say hello if you’re in the area! If you’re attending the get together, please find me and say hello!

I’m blogging my reads in the 10,000 books challenge at eharlequin. I did a count a few days ago but every day I remember other books I’ve read. I should keep better track, LOL. I think blogging them will help me do that. I did make a personal decision not to blog the books I hate. Yes, yes I know some people get shirty about that and I’m sure I’ll be accused of something or other because of it, but it’s a personal decision. Generally, I don’t want to spend time on books I hated over books I love. Now I will talk about books I enjoyed but may have had flaws. But I have my share of wallbangers too, god knows I have preferences just like anyone else. Still, I think I’d rather talk about books I want everyone to read instead of books I didn’t like. I bitch enough without that.

It’s a long weekend, yay! I hope it means a lot of writing but in truth it most likely means breaking up a lot of inter-sibling bickering, laundry and the cleaning of bathrooms.

Ascension will be out in less than two weeks! Whee! And then Making Chase on the 12th! It’s going to be a really good June.

I’m reading Gennita Low’s Virtually His, nearly done as a matter of fact and it’s so good! It’s also movie night for me and my dude.

Okay, off to clean the kitchen…

OH! Anya Bast’s Witch Fire is starting to show up in some bookstores! This is such a fabulous book and Anya is one of my favorite authors so you should go and grab it. If you like paranormal romance, magick, really hot chemistry, sexy heroes and smart heroines - this is the book for you. I’ll be reviewing it later in the week along with an interview with Anya as well.

Friday Booktalk

It’s been a good book week let me tell you!

First up, Jennifer Ashley’s Immortals: The Calling.

RT was a wonderful experience and one I am still reeling from. One of the best things about it was all the new books I picked up. I met Joy Nash at the Nocturne mixer and spoke with her about her Immortals book and I know Jennifer because we write at EC together so I made it a point to pick up The Calling and I’m so glad I did.

I love paranormal romance. I do. I think there are a lot of fresh voices out there with interesting and exciting takes on the genre and the first book in the Immortals series definitely qualifies.

In Adrian, we get a tortured hero, a wounded warrior with a reason to be tortured. Ashley doesn’t just tell us he is, she gives us the story of a man who carries the guilt of his lost brother on his conscience for millennia. It’s his search for his brother Tain that brings him smack dab into the middle of Amber’s universe.

Amber, a heroine who is refreshingly strong and yet still fragile and human. A witch who is also carrying the guilt of a lost sister. She’s three dimensional. Confused, attracted, scared, angry - and really well drawn.

The meta story of the Coven of Light and the Immortals is fascinating and I can’t wait to read the next offerings in the series. The chemistry between Adrian and Amber is marvelously done. The magic is interesting and fresh and the secondary characters are definitely people I want to read more about.

Another author I discovered at RT? Jennifer Armintrout. I picked up The Turning and The Possession and devoured them both in quick turns.

Once I started reading The Turning I could not put it down.

Armintrout has created a dark and edgy world filled with flawed characters struggling with large issues of humanity, morality, love, connection, evil, belonging, community and the basic nature of what we are.

The Turning was not what I expected at all and I loved it for that. Carrie is not a character I’ve read a million times. She makes mistakes. She doesn’t always do the right thing and she pays for it and others do as well.

The villain isn’t cardboard here. Cyrus is delightfully evil but he has *reason* to be. He’s complicated and I appreciated Armintrout’s skill in making me care about someone so lacking in morality and redeeming qualities.

I tended to want some romance and so I found myself wanting more between Nathan and Carrie but I admire the way Armintrout skates around Carrie’s blood tie with Cyrus and her attraction and later tie to Nathan.

All in all, a compelling read and one I absolutely recommend!

In The Possession - Armintrout is back taking risks again, something I admire so very much.

This time, Carrie is with Nathan, her new sire and Cyrus is dead. Only wait, he’s not and Nathan is possessed and Carrie has to work with assasins to find Nathan before he’s killed.

There’s a lot of external action going on, but again, the focus is the internal world of the characters. Carrie’s struggle to figure out where her place is with a man she loves but she knows can’t let go of another woman and her old tie to Cyrus. There are some characters from The Turning who come back and Armintrout fleshes out like Max (who I hope gets more page time next book!)

Cyrus’ new humanity and his understanding of his actions as a vampire - a seriously messed up, evil dude with major daddy issues - is for me, one of the high points of the story.

None of the characters are perfect. Carrie is a messed up woman but she should be. She was murdered and turned in the first book, assaulted, kidnapped and mindfucked as well. It all continues here but she struggles with caring for a man who cannot let go of his love of a woman long dead. How can you compete with that? And yet, she would die for him and not just because of the blood tie. But Cyrus is back and she’s conflicted. She makes big mistakes with everyone.

I like, so very much, characters who aren’t perfect. It takes a lot to write morally gray people even though most humans are that way. There is much good about Carrie, but she betrays people too.

Anyway, these books are not romances. There are romantic elements but they are dark, moody books without an HEA. I think Armintrout has created a really fascinating world and I will definitely pick up Ashes to Ashes when it comes out later this year.

This book is *different* than The Turning. It’s difficult to compare them but I will say one minor thing that yanked me out of the story over and over was the shift between Carrie’s first person POV and the third person POV of Cyrus and Max. I’m very laid back about POV issues but I will say up front I don’t think it worked. The shifts were extremely confusing and because first is so intimate, you really felt the distance from Carrie’s character when you were in Max’s head or Cyrus’, etc. IMO, it was a risky move, bold even, but the book would have been served better in all third if Carrie was off scene so much (which she is).

Linda Howard’s Raintree: Inferno

I suppose I don’t get why anyone would be surprised at the cliffhanger nature of the book, it’s the first book in a three book series. The whole premise of the series is that - it’s a series!

Unlike some others, I think this is one of my favorite LH books in a very long time. One thing I absolutely admire about her is her ability to write incredibly detailed scenes without using eight words when two will do. When she describes Lorna’s fear when she first meets Dante she had me and I didn’t put the book down until I’d finished.

Dante was an absolute control freak. He did take over her mind and treat her badly. Unlike a lot of other romances where we call that “alpha” and the whiny heroine we’re told is “spunky” eats it up, Lorna fought it the whole time and Dante has a reason. He also knows and ADMITS he was wrong.

I think in Dante and Lorna, Howard has taken some archetypes and fleshed them out. I loved the buildup of sexual tension here, I loved Lorna’s one condition for them to finally have sex. And I loved the meta story about the Raintree and I can’t wait to read more in the series.

This is category - Howard doesn’t have the space to really delve deep into her characters as she normally does and yet, I still walked away with a strong sense of who Dante is and how he got that way and who Lorna is as well. It’s very, very hard to write category with that level of three dimensional story
