This week I read several delightful books! I keep hearing people say they’re having a hard time finding great paranormals to read and I have to disagree. I’ve read so many fabulous paranormals and urban fantasy novels in the last few months I’m energized by the new voices (and not so new voices) in the genre. Paranormals and Paranormal romance is not dead, there are some amazing books out there!
First – Kim Harrison’s For A Few Demons More – Oh, gasp! Did I hesitate for even five seconds before ordering this in hardback? Nope. I loved it. I thought it took Rachel to some new places and it ended on a totally shocking note. I was miffed at first but as I believe Harrison is a fabulous writer, I’m choosing to believe she’s going to take us somewhere new with Rachel now that Rachel has been dealt some big losses. As long as it wasn’t done to clear the way for something! I know, that’s not specific but I don’t want to give spoilers.
Then I gobbled up Keri Arthur’s Full Moon Rising – this is what a total deviant I am – I read someone talking about the sex in the book and how it bothered them that until werewolves found their soul mates they got busy with loads of other people and I said, “oooh, must check that out.” I know, I’m terrible! But as it happens, it was a fabulous book and when I finished it I ordered the rest from Amazon and I’m nearly done with Kissing Sin (which came yesterday). These are not romances so I don’t apply romance rules to them. The need to have sex during the lunar phase each month is not an issue for me, it didn’t squick me or shock me and the meta universe Arthur has created is really interesting.
Patricia Briggs – Moon Called and Blood Bound – Mercy me (okay such a bad pun, sorry)! I love love love these books! Mercedes Thompson or Mercy is a skin walker/coyote shifter who was raised by werewolves for a large part of her life. She now lives in the Tri-Cities in Washington state and she’s a mechanic. Into her life we see Fae, werewolves, vamps, etc. Briggs has really written a series to be devoured – I love Mercy – she’s not a superhero, she’s scared but she does the right thing. Samuel, Adam, Stefan, Zee – all the other characters are interesting and three dimensional and I was sucked in right away.
I just got Lush in the mail yesterday so hopefully I’ll get to read it this weekend. Next Friday I’m going to talk about Vivi Anna’s Blood Secrets which I loved and as I told her yesterday, I think it’s her best book yet!

RE: “they got busy with loads of other people and I said, oooh, must check that out…” Just one of the reasons i love you and love your writing. Loved the Briggs books too – but then I adore Urban Fantasy and have for decades. (Scary that) Glad to hear you like new Kim book because it’s in my TBR and when I read a negative review by someone who’s tastes seem to run in same direction as mine, i developed a fear of picking up the book. I so didn’t want to be disappointed. Whew. Will be reading it next week out at the Masters when I’m not pointing and shooting with the camera.

Ive read all the books you mentioned and like you enjoyed them all. Along with Moon Called one of my favourite books last year, as was Touch the Dark by Karen Chance and I have just read the sequel Claimed by Shadow, which was just as good (her website has a couple of chapters of each book as excerpts). I have just finished Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews which is also very good (excerpt on her site) but unfortunately no sequel as yet! I think all 3 books are classed as Urban Fantasy. One more recommendation is a Samhain e-book, Steelflower by Lilith Saintcrow, which I stayed up way past my bedtime to finish.
I also wanted to thank you for Chased and am looking forward to going back to Petal in the summer! Jo

Rhian – the new Harrison is fab but there’s a twist that was rather shocking. Not enough Kisten for my taste either. Still, I loved it.
Jo – thank you so much! I loved Touch the Dark too and I’m jealous you got hold of an ARC for the next in the series – I’ve pre-ordered it from Amazon – it’s going to be a very good May and June I think.
I liked Steelflower as well, I think Lilith Saintcrow’s voice is wonderful.

I agree that there are a lot of really good paranormals out there, particularly in the fantasy/sci-fi section. I just finished Blood Bound and loved it. Another favorite is Nightlife by Rob Thurman. Great stuff. 🙂 I just picked up Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews. Hope to dig into it tonight. I’ve heard great things about Succubus Blues, but I haven’t grabbed it yet.

Jordan – Succubus Blues was outstanding. Really. Jackie’s Hell’s Belles was also a wonderful read. And C.E. Murphy’s Urban Shaman was one of the best UF books i’ve read in years.

PS – saw Cascadia Wolves were nominated for several “Fantasm” awards – enjoyed muchly thowing in my vote and saying “YES! YES! Lauren rocks.”
Along with voting for my other favs. Sucks though when two favorites are pinned against each other. Also sucks when books you expect to see in a category as outstanding aren’t there, ya know? Though it made it EASY to vote for Jaci under Demon category cuz neither Jackie nor Richelle were listed. No angst there.

I’m so glad you didn;t put any spoilers for A FEW DOLLARS MORE. I’d have to hurt you! LOL
I loved Kissing Sin, who doesn’t wasn a stallion of their own. *grin* I’ve already read book three too and am eagerly awaiting book 4 of the series.
I’ve eyed Moon Called, but not picked it up yet. Maybe I will now.

I have no doubt I’ll enjoy Lush!
Oh and in truth? The horse shifter thing kinda squicks me but it wasn’t a large part of the storyline so I could get past it. The spiders falling from the ceiling? EWW! I have book three and book four should be shipping soon from Amazon (on release)
